by Al- Ed. Hine ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 15, 1965
These are poems about America and Americans. While there is nothing especially new about collections of patriotic poems, this is an anthology with a difference. The poetry is arranged according to the eras in which it was written and the selection respects the poets' critical function; many of those included protested against their times. This is particularly obvious in the poetry of the Depression and World War II. In regard to the '30's, there are poems that rub the salt of satire into the wounding circumstances surrounding Prohibition and financial ruin; the conduct of the war and the home front were major themes in the '40's. These are not the most often collected poems and poets, particularly in the last half of the book. Mr. Hine has picked well through the moderns, and even when the poets are criticizing, the strength of this country comes through in This Land.
