THE BIRTHDAY BOY

...is Jerry McMann whose own birthday coincides with the tenth anniversary of his solidly successful public relations company. Jerry appears in the prologue wondering to which of his associates he will leave the business now that he has suffered several heart attacks, and in the epilogue after the party when he has made up his mind who will become his heir. In between we see Jerry's life and career as it appears to his dipsomaniac wife, his mistress, his chauffeur, his associates and clients. It is the usual story of the boy from the wrong side of the tracks who charmed and clawed his way to the top of the heap in New York, Paris and Hollywood and now has money and fame and power and little in the way of more spiritual achievements. Another of the novels sired by The Hucksters out of Executive Suite which in spite of the usual situations and characters commands the reader's attention by its mass of authentic detail and the slickness of the author's style.
