by Al J. Stump ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 1, 1952
A number of rather melodramatically presented sketches of such colorfuls of the sports world as Eddie Arcaro, Sam Snead, Mel Ott, etc. Twenty in all, the profiles run the gamut of sports from diving (Vickie Draves) to discus throwing (Bob Mathias) and the roster of athletes from the big timers (Bobby Jones) to the not so exalted (Bob Richards). Married along by Mr. Stump's admiration for his subjects, we learn of Arcaro's young days in a stable mad truant, live through tense moments on the putting green with Snead. The author's selection has breadth and a good sense of contrast, and his skill with the necessary on the scene material makes for some exciting reading.
