The long search by Amos Edwards and Martin Pauley for Debbie, the only survivor of his brother's family after an Indian massacre has an almost epic endurance and is a stark testament to the ""unresting vigilance"" which drove them on. With revenge as much a part of their years' search as love, they follow the Comanches only to find that Debbie has become more Indian than white. The cavalry comes and Amos rides with it to his death, but for Martin there is the hope that he can save her. A drama of stubborn courage to which the prose lends a matching stature.
