A sequel to Scots novelist Warner's acclaimed debut, Morvern Callar (1997), returns to the rootless life of that eponymous antiheroine as her wanderings bring her into contact with two strongly imagined, and keenly differentiated, characters: a disc jockey organizing an immense ""rave"" to be held on a remote airstrip, and an ""Aircrash Investigator"" obsessed with saving lives in a culture where it seems life is often indifferently thrown away. Oddly reminiscent of Faulkner's Pylon (and with more than a bit of a nod toward The English Patient), this tense, curious novel is best read in conjunction with its predecessor--and there are inconclusive suggestions that it may be part of a larger work still in progress.
