DOES ANYBODY CARE ABOUT LOU EMMA MILLER?

Sure, somebody cares--heartthrob Tommy is ""sick and tired"" of Leu Emma's sister Maddy ""actin' like she was the only Miller girl in Gloriosa High."" And Leu Emma's milliner stepmother Miss Kate is concerned that she's ""too quiet,"" not ""enough trouble."" Still, Maddy the debating-team dark hope is the family starlet, and 15-year-old Leu Emma has competition for Tommy too--from tough, vampish newcomer Zetta. But when Zetta says something insulting about Leu Emma, Maddy hits her--it's Miller family Rule Number One to stick together--and then unfairly blames Leu Emma for her ouster from the debating team, rousing Leu Emma to a rare show of anger. More important, though, in breaking Leu Emma of her self-pitying timidity is the Women's Suffragette Club campaign to elect a female mayor: she gets out and marches--with a highly visible goat--in the parade for candidate Biddle and then crowns herself with glory as the force behind Gloriosa's first public library. Calico-and-spice Kansas ructions with somewhat more emotional development than earlier volumes in the series--but most appeal, nonetheless, to girls like docile, put-upon Leu Emma.
