The withdrawal of Mary Ann Robinson, who ""lived in her own world, fashioned in her own mind"" accelerates into full flight when first she is raped, and then a month later witnesses a shooting in a New York subway station. She runs away from home to find asylum in a cheap rented room- and a job in a five and ten, and then attempts to jump off an East River bridge. Her suicide prevented by Mike, a mechanic, she is taken back to his basement rooms where she kicks his eye out. He keeps her captive there and in his soberer moments appeals to her as his ""last chance"", wants her as his wife. Finally escaping, she returns of her own free will, and no longer in recoil accepts the life he offers her which will free her..... A first novel, all of this seems very disturbed- and not a bit disturbing- not even to the point of a disgusted pity.
