Against a background of eleventh century England is this story of Edward the Confessor. Told by Edgar, Edward's page, chamberlain and cupbearer, is an account of the saintly King from his arrival at Winchester at forty to his death in the sixties. A gripping portrayal of England torn by blood feuds, battles, tension between church and state, and piracy, provides the atmosphere for Edgar's account of his King's victory over conflict by sheer goodness. The King, possessed of a darting and brilliant mind, is a laudable subject for historical romance, and is handled here with skill and enthusiasm. A rewarding glimpse into early English history.
