by Alfred -Ed. Stefferud ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 16, 1952
An invaluable symposium of incentives for reading, this collects speeches and voluntary contributions from publishers, editors, educators, writers, librarians, book-sellers and an array of workers along missionary reading lines. The collection of names will be familiar- and welcome- to many: Bennett Cerf, Marchette Chute, Sanford Cobb, John Gassner, Gilbert Highet, Holbrook Jackson, H. M. Lydenberg, Fulton Oursler, Anne J. Richter, Margaret S. Scoggin, John T. Winterich- to slight many others who have friends throughout bookminded groups- and their interests range from benefits of reading, to love of words, to programs for reading stimulation, on to reading skills, timing and efficiency and even remedial reading. The subjects are almost endless- the Bible and religious books (and proud are we to point out that our Religious Book editor, Kenneth Miller, is among those present), reading aloud, rural problems, discussion groups, international and special interests, the physical making up of a book, scientific books and textbooks, the cheaper paper books (with some of our library clients speaking out)- all sorts of ideas and springboards and impetuses (it couldn't be ""impeti"") for inspiring more and more reading. Just so this will not seem too longhair, there are sections on fiction, short stories, poems and plays- how to analyze, how to enjoy and how to cubit them on to your stature. An absolute treasure house in the battle of bibliophilia versus bibliophobia- and from a personal taping, we'll stack the ""philia"" over the ""phobia"". At least- there's something for everyone whose job, or interest, or hobby, or trade- is in books. Spurred by the findings of USAB meetings, and given the nod by nine sponsors, this will be a non-profit making book. And the Robert Osborn illustrations will point up the material sharply. Peachy public relations job.
