EAGLE OF GUATEMALA

History of Latin America is singularly little known in this country, so any additions to our slender knowledge are welcome. This is a vigorous biography of Justo Rufino Barrios, one of the great liberals of Central America, who died while trying to realize his dream of union for the weak small states. Barrios-at ten- was punished by his father and made to serve four years as muleteer. During those years he learned the ignominy of poverty, peonage. He struggled for his education- then gave everything to bring his country up to his standards of a progressive democracy. One great love -- for his wife Francisca- dominated his personal life. A valuable book.
