The text is brief and direct. Aliki's accompanying pictures are stylized and (within the boundaries necessary to the dignity of the subject amusing. William Pen's England, his goals in setting a Quaker colony in the New World and his relations with Indians and early settlers make this book simple, basic non-fiction for the first two grades. The colors used in the illustrations have a water base which manages to capture both the bright Indian approach to dress and the rich soberness of the Quaker shades.
