THE JOURNEY DOWN

A woman prominent in theatrical circles through the field of stage design writes what is evidently autobiographical in fiction form -- a segment of her inner life, set down rather hysterically. The book falls into a half dozen parts, tied together because they relate to one phase or another of her relations with a younger man, a coming author. (1) The meeting on the boat, and the immediate power of attraction. (2) A day in England, spent together at a cottage in the Lake country. (3) Back to New York, subjective handling of conversations, the theatre only as it intrudes upon her daily life, the break, for which he is responsible, a last scene in the hospital where suicide is implied and a reconciliation made with life. A book without names -- He and She medium, with an intimate inner picture, no external action , a flash here and there into the lives of two well-known people, unabashedly personal in detail, elliptical only in construction as a novel. Can't see general interest. Certainly many will feel it in questionable taste. Not justified as was Duet In Discord by method of handling.
