Green and golden, and perhaps a little pink and white, is this memoir of a year in the life of Melanie, eight, expectedly ""sensitive"" and perhaps a revenant from the author's own past. Under the careful tutelage of her parents- Americans in Paris, nurses and governesses, she plays in the Luxembourg Gardens with her three younger sisters and brothers and fights with the gang which victimizes them; she spends summers in Brittany and is visited by some English cousins; she worries over her grandparents in America suffering from The Depression; she falls secretly in love with Nicholas, a young musician who practises on their piano and becomes secretly engaged to her younger friend Amaury; she knows about but does not inform on the romance of their nurse with a married man; etc., etc. It is, all in all, a pretty, well-mannered reminiscence- airy, agreeable, perishable.
