In the background of young Webb Morse's life and governing the very pattern of his existence, is the issue between slavery and freedom that divided the people of Kansas in 1855. A Boston boy newly arrived in Lawrence with his family, Webb has his problems with and misgivings about a homesteader's life. But his first year in Lawrence, during which Webb becomes thoroughly embroiled with the Free Staters and their gradually more significant skirmishes with the ""Ruffians"" of Atchison and Wakarusa, he realizes the value of liberty and is able to tell his lawyer father that his real roots lie in the new home. A story direct in its telling and illustrative of the hotbed of pre-Civil War controversy.
