GOODBYE, SUMMER

A sequel to They Came to a River (reported in 1941 bulletin, p.101) which centers about the only son of Chris and Stephen Patch, this will have an audience in the readers of the earlier book. A pioneering book in another sense than the story of the cultivating of the Columbia valley -- Chris and Stephen's story -- this takes young Steve away from the ranch to Seattle. There he goes to school, comes to know his father's old friend and fellow social rebel Rannedge, meets his half sister and the beautiful Enid Williams, and grows in stature. Home at the time of his father's death, he has his first love, then at Grand Coules writes his first story. Back in Seattle he comes of age as a man with the world before him and with Enid to love -- we last see him on a boat facing round the continent to New York and Enid and his destiny. Witnessing Steve broaden his horizons and come to the freedom of maturity through his contacts and thought is a comfortable if not enlivening experience.
