THE MITTEN

Based on a Ukrainian folk tale, this is a variant on the old straw that broke the camel's back. A little boy drops his warm, furry mitten in the snow. A mouse finds it and scurries inside. She is joined by a frog, an owl, a rabbit, a fox, a wolf, a wild bear, and a bear. Finally a little cricket tries to crawl in, but this is too much for the mitten, which cracks open. Readers will be relieved to know that the little boy gets a new pair of mittens for Christmas. The animals, although left outside in the cold, are clad in magnificent Ukrainian costumes and certainly don't look very cold. The simplicity of the folktale is retained in the story and in the brilliantly-colored, stylized illustrations.
