KICKLE SNIFTERS AND OTHER FEARSOME CRITTERS

The side-hill gouger, hoop snake, hide-behind, and other critters we remember from our own childhood are joined here by the even more peculiar kneeless hugag (""If you see a tree or a house or a fence that leans to one side, a hugag slept there""), James Whitcomb Riley's squidgicum-squee (so shy it swallows itself to escape detection), and the gowrow which specializes in parting suckers from their spare change at carnivals. Rounds makes the members of this far-fetched menagerie look appropriately deranged and, for doubting city slickers, there are notes on the sources, though Schwartz allows that many have been ""embellished"" a bit. The names alone are worth the price of admission, and this home grown bestiary threatens to upstage all those well-groomed unicorns and dragons from foreign parts.
