GO, PHILLIPS, GO!

Basketball may be the first and foremost passion in Pete Phillips' highschool-senior life, but otherwise she's just another old-fashioned girl who is the last to know when she's in love and gives in gracefully to the student teacher who is persistent enough to table his proposal of marriage until after that all-important end of the season sports banquet marks Pete's passage from athletics to adulthood. Somehow it's hard to imagine a straight shooter like Pete indulging in moonshine like ""when you went away, nothing seemed the same. . . the aim seemed polluted, and my food tasted like straw. . ,"" especially since she exudes the health, normality and multiethnic good sense that are a Walden heroine's birthright -- and that make the devotion of a guy like Burl seem no more than her due.
