by Amy Heath ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 30, 1992
A lively depiction of a family business--a bakery--on the day before Christmas, when Sofie is allowed to help behind the counter for the first time. It doesn't work out quite as she expects--when the hurried customers don't notice her offers of help, Sofie assigns herself the important job of answering the phone--but at the end of the day she does help a child her own age select a gingerbread sleigh and fill it with cookie stars. Heath describes the goodies with gusto and includes recipes for marzipan (raw egg whites) and cinnamon stars (sounds tricky but delicious). Hamanaka's boldly handsome, full-bleed oils show an ebullient, warmhearted interracial family.
