THE MIDNIGHT EATERS

Convalescing, Nana is staying at Samantha's house, sharing Samantha's bunk beds. On a windy night, Samantha is so restless in her top bunk that Nana tactfully suggests that the house is twitching; and though both have orders (Nana's from the doctor) to stay in bed, they creep down to the kitchen together for a snack--nothing sensible, but no-holds-barred sundaes. They also share secrets and the family album, reminiscing about recently deceased Grandpa. Hest's dialogue is at once briskly entertaining and affectionate; the small format and Gundersheimer's spare, tidy illustrations reinforce the delicious feeling of special midnight camaraderie. As cozy as a snowy night by the fire.
