STORIES OF THE PAINTERS

This should be a good staple item, for it has taken a definite place in libraries and schools at the old $8.50 price and now, at $3.00, should reach a wider market. There is nothing particularly significant in the arrangement of material, but the breakdown into schools, -- Italian, Spanish, Flemish, German, Dutch, French and English, follows routine lines. The story as a whole gives any young reader a sense of the contribution made by each artist to his time and place, and there are enough anecdotes to give the whole a human quality. With 32 facsimile reproductions in color and 39 in black and white, the book is amazingly good value.
