THE FACE OF NEW YORK

The photographs of Andreas Feininger with commentary by Susan Lyman of the Museum of the City of New York combine to make a book certain to find a special market. Mr. Feininger mirrors the transition of New York from its beginnings on to today with photographs of sketches from the early seventeenth century and of the same sites through various stages of development. The savage skyscrapers, the amazing waterfront, the polyglot peoples he finds most fascinating. He gives the color of localities, many shots of sky and shoreline, the tumultuous traffic. There is mention of New York's prides and problems. A historical, somewhat majestic and distant view of the city which concentrates on her rather than her inhabitants, touching on her splendors and her shames, this book has a magnetic and superlative subject for portraiture and an able artist as portrayer.
