HAMMER AND FIRE

This is the first of two volumes subtitled, Toward Divine Happiness and Mental Health, an ambitious work on the spiritual life. This first volume is concerned, theoretically and practically, with the needs and means of the spiritual life more than with psychological problems, though the latter are not entirely relegated to treatment in the second volume. Essentially, the author sets forth a complete program of spiritual living, using St. Thomas and St. John of the Cross as guides, emphasizing mental health and human happiness as epiphenomenal adjuncts of sanctity. The book is addressed to all Catholics, but particularly to the layman. Comprehensive treatment is given to every relevant topic of dogmatic, ascetic and mystical theology. The entire work is clearly and interestingly written as a well thought out synthesis, inviting the reader to embark upon the road to sanctity as being the only meaningful and truly balanced, happy way of life. This is a very good introduction to the spiritual life for beginners who are unacquainted with the literature of spirituality. Imprimatur.
