THE LION FAMILY BOOK

Splendid color photos in the rich colors of equatorial Africa, often with the long shadows and clear light of the setting sun, dominate this documentary account of a year's cycle in the life of a pride of lions. Explaining that she and the photographer spent a year camping in a VW bus while they observed the lions, Hofer's straightforward (if occasionally chatty) text interprets the photos: the pregnant female seeking a safe place for her cubs; the cubs learning boundaries as they romp with older siblings or another family; the yearlings observing the hunt they are still too immature to join; the mother eating before her cubs because her strength is more important to the pride. A kill is shown (not gruesome); mating is not. The lions are given names, but only as identification. A beautiful, useful, and appealing addition to books about animals.
