Pleasant going- this cloak and dagger story, femininely styled, and set in the lush and colorful background of Tangier. Julia Probyn, deceptively frivolous in appearance, with brains, imagination, ingenuity and drive behind her glamor front, was persuaded to take off for the African coast area in search of a lost cousin, now heir to a down-graded English estate. Where her search led her- the dangers involved- the chances taken- the good luck and bad- and the outcome- make for a beguiling tale, with its fair share of captivating tourist detail. Here's an answer for the multitude of readers demanding a good story, adventure, mystery, romance; a modern setting; better than competent craftsmanship; and no particular strain on the gray matter. There aren't many novels that qualify, so this should meet a very real demand. Not Ann Bridge at her best, but a satisfying candidate for her market.
