The narrator of The Stories Julian Tells returns in another delightful ""chapter book."" A book which begins ""A Day When Frogs Wore Shoes"" promises much interest and humor, and Cameron delivers both in these five stories. Julian's tale of life with Mom, Dad, little brother Huey, and best-friend Gloria are charming. The children hunt for frogs, learn how to become as brave as Superboy, send a message in a bottle, and, in the process, Julian discovers how to be a better older brother. Dad provides some gentle messages throughout, confessing that he himself is learning how to improve as a father. Simple, clear writing makes the book accessible to advanced beginning readers and will interest the older child as well. The stories are also fine read-alouds. Sprightly illustrations scattered through the book add to its appeal. It is, incidentally, shown through the illustrations, not the text, that Julian and his family are black. The stories not only convincingly portray the mind and heart of a child, but do it with rare imagination and humor. A winner.
