This Justifies its title since the recipes, chosen from thousands, are contributed from every state in the union via the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Since The Joy of Cooking there has been no comparable basic, broad-gauged, all-purpose cookbook although, at 2000 pages, it may be somewhat unwieldy. The Rombauer book provides more elementary principles; little space is permitted here to frozen foods or canned goods; short cuts get short shrift. But most of the recipes are from scratch and the kitchen upkeep at the end is comprehensive and informative. It is an all-in-one cookbook for the housewife and it will be launched with lots of calories--$50,000, and through women's clubs with eleven million members.
