Little 1 led a lonely life. No group would have him -- neither two pears, nor three bears, up through 9 frisky fish. He pleads with 5 parasols to add 1 and become six; with 6 nuts to do the same and become 7 -- but all to no avail. Only a red hoop -- the perfect zero, takes him for a mate and together they make 10: Parents acquainted with modern techniques in teaching mathematics will be appalled. The simple concept of addition successfully hammered home falls apart when Little 1 is added to another single quantity (be it a zero-like hoop or anything else) and declared to make 10. The unimaginative refusals of each group also adds to the debits here.
