...One day, as all the hippos lay dozing in the river, Happy lifted his head out of the water to yawn, but---`HIC!'"" The poor hippopotamus tries holding his breath and finds himself gently floating up into the air. He then goes on to try swallowing water, standing on his head, snoozing, and sitting on a porcupine, but persistently hiccuping all the while. Eventually he wanders off into the jungle where he meets another hippopotamus with hiccups and they both laugh so hard that they become completely cured. The illustrations, done in heavy black lines covered by a wash in warm tones of greens and browns; show Happy in some marvelous poses as he tries to execute the suggested remedies. -- This should tickle the young out of their own hiccups.
