Miss Malcolmson has divested ""Ichabod Paddock""--from Yankee Doodle's Cousins--of the 'exchange of courtesies' between the Captain and Crooked Jaw the whale and other stylistic felicities; she has also suppressed such plot transitions as Mrs. Paddock spying the witch inside the whale (instead ""She knew that her husband was bewitched"") and ""the wildest Nantucket sleigh-ride of all time"" plus the whale's eventual surrender (here ""Her harpoon held fast""--whereupon we cut to shore). Far worse, however, are the crude, garish illustrations insofar as they cheapen the whole undertaking.
