A mystery set offshore New England delves into the background of an old Chinese desk brought home by Stevie Allen's great grandfather. It also sketches in the personalities involved to a more satisfying degree than most books for the age level. Stevie is eleven and artistic. He is sensitive to family and school opinion of drawing as a sissified occupation; he is worried sick when he fears his father must sell the old desk to have enough money for a new boat and lobster traps. A way out comes with the notice of antique thieves in the community. When Stevie is instrumental in their capture he not only gains a new kind of recognition, but the reward money that will help him with his education.
