BLANCHE OF BLUEBERRY BARRENS

The author, who has written for children of all ages, tells here a story set in the blueberry barrens of Maine during the First World War. It is the despair of eleven-year old Blanche, that while the rest of the family are picking berries, she must remain at the Camp, keeping house and looking after baby, since she is notoriously a poor picker. Her experiences, which include an encounter with a bear, falling down a well, and taming an unmannerly contemporary, teach her the valor of her own courage. A homey story which girls will like and which illuminates the relative obscurity of a time and place in American life.
