While this is an adequate though not significant historical novel, it deals with a period and a situation that overlaps Ben-Hur, so it might have some plus value for teen age readers. Tiberius is the Roman Emperor- his succession in doubt. Sejanus, his military first in command, seeks dictatorial power for himself. Power politics center around two inadequate young men, Gemellus and Caligula; and Quintus Flavius, hero of this book, who is made a tool for bargaining, though seeks no throne for himself, wanting only the post of commandant in Judaea. When Pontius Pilate is sent instead, he is put in a difficult spot- as preceptor of Gemellus on a visit to the area. That his visit coincides with the crucifixion provides the Ben-Hur parallel.
