Callie Royce knows the Chantry house isn't haunted but she can't explain the floating flute solo, especially since its pure tones come from the deceased owner's gold flute. Fortunately she identifies second-cousin Philip Chantry, an amnesiac who improves with her coaching. Pip Newell, new neighbor with dark glasses, must be the culprit in Callie's callow judgment but everyone else is dubious and no one wonders why Philip avoids cameras and his governess, and would shack up in an empty house he doesn't know is his. A dumbwaiter that may move, a room with bad associations, breathless little brother rescue operations--half-noted variations on an old theme, busy rather than melodic.
