The author is a native of Poland and in 1938 won his government's award for literature so quite naturally this story rings true and has the force and fervor that a writer can achieve when he talks of conditions and feelings in his own land. This has been translated by Jessie McEwen and illustrated by Zhenya Gay. The story tells of a young boy, a village cowherd, whose ambition is to play the violin. His father is a soldier and his mother works in the field. Through the first part of the story all is peaceful but the war clouds gather and finally the family moves to America, land of promise.
