by Antonia Fraser ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 24, 1982
Investigator Jemima Shore, now a TV interviewing celebrity, is covering the Larminster Theatre Festival as part of a video series--and the Festival's home-town star is Cristabel Cartwright, who has recently returned to husband Julian (lord of Lark Hall) after a scandalous, ill-fated elopement with rock-star Barry Blagge (son of the Cartwright family retainers, James and Rose). But the rehearsals, under the direction of babyfaced, ruthless Nat Fitzwilliam, are marked by misfortune--starting with the drowning death of actress Filumena Lennox at a beach party. And, as opening night nears, Fitzwilliam is found strangled in the empty theater--and James Blagge is arrested for the murder. . . while Cristabel's fear and uncertainty attract Jemima's prime sleuthing attention. As usual with Fraser, the solution and motivations here don't quite come off. But this time, with Fraser on obviously familiar theater/scandal ground, there's enough colorful characterization and show-biz pizazz for mild, chic diversion.
