Here, stemming from My Colonel and His Lady and Home by the River and the roots of the Hampton Plantation, is the yearly pageant of the Santee Delta country in stories of the outdoors. The signals of spring, the events of summer, the flags of autumn and the flood and quiet of winter. Stories of boar hunting -- and hounds, of catching and killing diamondback rattlers, of a stag hunt, accompany those of the disappearance of a little girl, of a king snake battling a diamondback, of the Negroes with whom the author has lived all his life. The cypress, live oaks, rice fields, the pines, the savanna, the river and the ocean are a background for all the wild life with which Rutledge is so familiar and of which he writes so warmly. For his many followers this will be a welcome addition to the earlier South Carolina landscapes.
