THE ENCHANTED ISLANDS

Again Puget Sound (see Sea Pup- 1954) backgrounds a good family story which should do for this age and eight to elevens alike. The children of two families, the Hills and the Edens, have made a plan to rent a cruising ketch and sail it for two weeks among the San Juan Islands lying near the Hills' summer place on Orcas Island. As the six youngsters, ranging in age from late teens on down, get ready to leave, their excitement and their hopes that they will find an uninhabited island and maybe even pirates, mount. And their trip pays off richly. They learn a lot about their surroundings, getting to know them in their more ferocious as well as their more peaceful moods. They also make a new friend- a ""pirate"" named Gabriel who frightens and worries them at first as he follows them mysteriously in his own boat. He turns out to be a truant from a state training school and a boy who will do better in the home offered him by the Hills.
