AST TO FREEDOM

The Communist seizure of power in China forms the background for the story of sixteen-year-old Mei-lin's life prior to and following this event. Her wish for a nursing career is thwarted by financial problems and is succeeded by her betrothal to the son of a family friend. When the young man becomes an ardent Communist and assists in a public pre-decided trial, Mei-line decides to break her engagement. She succeeds in entering Hong Kong and makes her way to a sister on Formosa. The author's familiarity with the China of the late 1940's is evident in her handling of old customs and of the initial reaction to the Communists. The book is well-written and uses the framework of the teen-age novel to provide considerable information about China, the country's people, and their problems.
