The principles of a western liberalism, pieced together and redefined, with the intent of meeting the threat of a ""Communist creed"" which claims to answer every eventuality. The emphasis falls mainly, if in an oblique and scattered way, upon the development from earliest times of western philosophic, economic and religious institutions, and the enrichment and impoverishment for western man of such ideals as ""justice, democracy, liberty, freedom, capitalism, 'free enterprise', individualism"". Christianity, specifically Protestant Christianity, emerge as the dominant and seminal forces in western life, establishing not only the standards but working out the social evolution of all those values cherished by the west, ranging from suffrage to representative government and the integrity of man. Skipping lightly over psychological influences, and similarly not detained by the Hebrew and Greek heritage, Mr. Lower avoids any unsettling criticisms of the fact that ""the western world is the way of life of which English-speaking Protestantism has been the nucleus"". One cannot see this as of value except to those with corresponding limitations in the field of religious education.
