A delightful story of ranch life in Hawaii, a story in which two girls, Pam, who had never lived anywhere else, and Emily, who had been brought up by a strict aunt in Boston, share the experiences a year of joy and sorrow bring them. Ranching at its most dramatic; trips through sections of Hawaii rarely experienced in books; and a good deal of background detail of native life offset the somewhat too lush and luxurious aspects of the tale. The plot hinges on the peril that hangs over them of losing the ranch to a rich American. At the end Maun Loa effects two cures. Paul Brown pictures put the finishing touch to a grand book.
