When the 900 ton cod schooner, Faroes Seeker, struck a submerged floating timber, its propeller shaft snapped and the ship was left helpless in a ten gale storm. On Mykines Island, where the men's families awaited their return, a school of whales is sighted and all the island men, except sixteen-year-old Sven, his crippled uncle, and aged grandfather, take off to make a killing. This combination of circumstances (thoroughly believable) sets in motion a hair-raising tale of terror. The intruder is a polar bear, made vicious by hunger. Sven combines his youthful strength with Grandfather Napoleon's aged wisdom in an attempt to kill the bear. As the action unfolds, the reader alternately experiences fear of and sympathy for the bear, though neither emotion outweighs his admiration for the islanders whose courage is magnificent. Written with the verve that characterized Yugoslav Mystery (1964, p. 414, J-138)
