PIGS FROM A TO Z

Thirty meticulous etchings form a puzzle picture book in which seven piglet people build an elaborate tree house. The jacket copy explains that all seven will be found in each picture, together with five concealed versions of one of the letters of the alphabet plus its preceding and following letters. A key on the final pages locates the letters; but to find missing pigs, sometimes represented only by a tiny hoof or ear, there's no help but further searching. The pictures also refer to objects and activities with appropriate initials (photographs, nap, music). The etchings are splendidly designed, executed and reproduced. Much of the detail, including a plausible Rube Goldberg sawmill and windmill, is entrancing; the windmill simultaneously works pump; bellows, and washing machine agitator. The multistoried tree house is the ne plus ultra of tree houses. Too difficult for the youngest, but should provide hours of pleasure to puzzle fans, art lovers, and the mechanically inclined.
