HEAT

Dour Larry Pick, Deputy Director of a government think-tank specializing in environmental disasters, follows a hunch and gets together a secret research team to nose out a possible connection between global CO concentrations and the freakish behavior of the weather. The team's horrifying conclusions are first concealed and then publicly discredited by a pair of oleaginous higher-ups. It takes the first unmistakable signs of lethal heat buildup to bring the country to its senses. As doomsday scenarios go, this one has much to recommend it. It is about a problem of dreadfully real importance, incorporates a lot of valuable information, and is put together with brisk economy. The perfunctory story is no great distraction until the inevitable race-against-time finale--but at that point it collapses into incompetent embarrassment. By fictional criteria. . . well, forget fictional criteria. By factual ones, this could be fairly important.
