Thriller- adventure packed- in the waters off the boundary line between Canada and the United States in the northwest. The story involves some questionable activities in which two young people become enmeshed,- one a youth wanted by the police for escape from a reform school, the other a girl trying to be man of the family in her father's stead- and finding it pretty bitter. Their romance has rocky going, with violence and death the toll before the mystery of drug smuggling is solved, the two young people exonerated, and ""perilous passage"" won through to calmer waters. The island background with its oddly assorted inhabitants, some on one side, some on the other; the household in which Devvy at 18 tries to stem the tide of terror her strange stepmother provides; the various people who were not what they seemed, -notably Paddy Burke and the parson- these set off the now tender, now violent pattern of love against terror. Good reading.
