LETTERS OF STRINDBERG TO HARRIET BOSSE

Harriet Bosse was the famous Swedish dramaturgist's third wife- very briefly so- and she has contributed connecting and explanatory notes to these letters which have been translated by the editor (also the translator of Strindberg's last play). Prior to this marriage in 1901, Strindberg had been mentally as well as physically ill- and certainly the relationship with Harriet Bosse, who became a famous actress, brought- judging from the letters- little serenity to his later years. The first letters are professional, formal, tutelary- but always effusive and extravagant; the later letters- during the separation- become vindictive and supplicatory and are always tortured; but the correspondence continued until Harriet's remarriage- their child, Lillan, a common bond.... Over and above the admirers of Strindberg, a minimal market at best, it is difficult to gauge American interest in this correspondence.
