Henry Schoolcraft's journey with Governor Cass' expedition to find the source of the Mississippi in 1820 presents some little known Americana in a sincerely written story by this Wisconsin novelist and biographer. As a young geologist, Schoolcraft was invited to go on the expedition that started by canoe from Detroit in the Spring, headed north to Michillmackinac, to the Sault, and into Lake Superior before turning south to the Mississippi source district and the Chinese puzzle of lakes- any one of which could have been the source. But of equal importance on the journey was the study of Indian relations. As he went on, Schoolcraft became an avid student of Indian culture, learning its language and ways, falling in love with the half Indian Jane Johnston, and keeping the records that were to prove invaluable to later students.
