THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE

The Death Ship by this author caused a sensation abroad, but was a flop here. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is less sensational, less powerful, and shows many of the same faults of structure, inconclusive, unconvincing handling of details. Doubt whether the advertising as ""a breathless tale of primitive adventure"" will carry the average reader through dull pages in which two derelicts and an ex-prospector convert themselves into treasure hunters. What a chip on his shoulder against humanity the man seems to have -- what unpleasant scenes and characters he portrays. If intended as a plea for the underdog, it lamentably fails as propaganda, for his underdogs deserve elimination.
