MORRIS GOES TO SCHOOL

. . . and pedagogy takes a vacation. Because he can't read ""candy store"" or count Iris pennies, Morris the Moose enrolls in Miss Fine's first grade. He can't fit into a seat or make sense of the alphabet at first (""Where is the bee? I'm afraid of bees!"") or find the right place to 'go'; but with a little adjustment on both sides (including a new sign, ""BOYS and MOOSE""), he makes rapid progress. Antlers substitute for fingers in arithmetic and turn Morris into a COAT CLOSET for ""make-believe."" By day's end he's learned to hoof-paint, spell moose (after two misses: ""Oh, I am hard to spell!"")--also to spot ""candy store"" and pay up. An old-school burlesque with this to be said for it as a scholar Morris is a clown but as a teacher Miss Fine is no fool.
