by Barbara & D. X. Fenten ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 1, 1974
There's little here that couldn't be learned from intelligent label reading and some of the suggested sources for natural foods -- like growing one's own vegetables indoors -- will yield more emotional than physical sustenance. However, the Fentens are one step beyond the bean-sprout mentality of The Organic Living Book, encouraging an intelligent, questioning attitude in dealing with both supermarkets and the neighborhood health food store and warning against fad diets and reliance on vitamin supplements. Though it's unlikely that any parents will be turned on to nutrition by their offspring slipping brewers' yeast into the soup as suggested here, the kids themselves may begin to ponder the amount of chemicals (five pounds a year?) that they consume in processed, artificial foods -- and perhaps turn to others like the Silversteins for some inside dope on The Chemicals We Eat and Drink (KR, 1973).
